Artist Statement
“To Paint a woman is to possess her.” – Modigliani
I paint to proclaim that I am my own. The patriarchal model of male painter objectifying and “possessing” his model becomes a feeble parody of ownership in comparison to this: a woman (wife, mother, homemaker, painter) staking her claim on what must be hers and her alone: her identity.
I possess myself with paint and in paint. I hide nothing from myself. Painting the self that has been a painter for decades – much longer than I have been a wife and mother – I repossess identity, proclaim my individualism, claim my self.
